Mark Menendez: Great Blue Heron Colored Pencil Tutorial

Water, fluffy clouds and of course, a majestic Great Blue Heron are all worthy subjects to study and draw, and Mark has all the secrets and techniques to help you along the way. Each of the many types of feathers on this heron are handled in a slightly different way – but each technique is clearly shown and easily mastered. The technique for the wing feathers, in particular, is fascinating and so very do-able.

You’ll start by drawing the eye, in 6 clear steps, on Light Blue Canson paper, then move through each type of feather and texture, ending with learning how to let some of the blue paper show through to create the billowy soft clouds.

Basic techniques

Sorry to say that I was a bit disappointed in the tutorial. After looking over the material and following his demo it was apparent that it was all very basic information and nothing that would have enhanced my drawing skills toward a more professional drawing.
