Juror's Statement
2018 Juror: Paco Martin Dominguez
Winner of last year’s Best of Show Award. View last year's show >>
I was born in Madrid, Spain. I have had a lifelong passion for drawing and painting. I love playing the guitar too and that's something that goes along with drawing.
I've been using colored pencils since I was a child. I spent long hours drawing and painting for myself and for my school friends, each painting was a new adventure to me.
Basically self-trained in the techniques of graphite and color pencil, colored pencils have been growing on me over the last few years.
Little by little I was facing bigger artistic challenges and I made my decision about four years ago to devote myself full time to colored pencils.
Paco's selections for the 19th Annual Member Show Awards:
Best of Show
Falling Waters by Carol E Maltby
After seeing the whole gallery of works for several days I am still impressed by Carol's work. Her work is masterfully executed, it conveys freshness, depth and movement. The texture of the trees, the stones, the impenetrable foliage, prove an admirable ability and talent.
The representation of a landscape in art, taken to its maximum expression, should allow the viewer to feel the environment, not just see it, but perceive it through all their senses. And that's what Carol has masterfully accomplished with her work.
The level of realism of this landscape is absolutely amazing.
The work, as a whole, is meant to recreate a humid forest environment, where the viewer can be part of it. I love the light on the leaves of the trees, especially on the left side of the work, as well as the fall of water; it's a worthy spectacle. Watching the work for a few minutes almost allows you to hear the sounds of nature.
First Place
Finding the One by Scott Krohn
The polished stones by the action of water catch the viewer's eye immediately and provide with an excellent reason to create a work of art from, seemingly, such a simple element. The diversity of shapes, sizes and colors is a real gift for your eyes and spirit.
Amazing work by Scott. I love the composition and the meticulous work of this work of art. The surface of the stones, sometimes polished and soft and sometimes rough, is perfectly achieved.
The three central stones attract attention. The heart-shaped stone with all those beautiful colors on its surface and the one on its left, with a spectacular realism and the one on the bottom.
The skillful use of shadows in these three central elements ,as well as on the whole set, provides the work with a lot of depth and realism and I really feel like grabbing any of them. Without a shadow of a doubt, it is an extraordinary job and it proves an admirable level of dexterity.
Second Place
Eye Candy IV by Gretchen Parker
Crystals in art, their transparencies and the radiance they distill, the optical effects and the coloration they project, is a fascinating phenomenon. And a challenge for the artist capable of facing such work.
I am absolutely in love with the work of Gretchen, it is a work of art with a high degree of difficulty. How difficult it is to get the crystal and the great amount of reflections, not only on the ball, but in the piece that holds it and in the support surface.
On a neutral background, the crystal sphere stands out. With green and violet colors, it captures your attention right away, lots of very well-accomplished details make you look at it in awe and lose track of time. The pedestal that holds the ball shows such an amazing job, green reflections, violets, glitters. Skillfully, the dark area of the background emphasizes the highlights more brightly. I just love it.
And what can we say about the support surface? The polished look, masterfully achieved, great reflections, it actually looks like real marble!
The color, the elegance in the composition and the level of dexterity of this work amazes me.
Third Place
First Bloom by Robin Manelis
The use of natural elements whether plants, flowers or fruits as central motifs in a work of art gives rise to works of great interest. Motif, composition and perspective are very important aspects for the work to have a soul. But also the atmosphere that manages to recreate in the retina of the viewer, and in this case, Robin is able to capture a beautiful interaction between a ray of sun and a cactus in all the splendor of the flowering period.
I love how Robin handles light. The open flower right in the center of the work has an extraordinary luminosity, emerges splendid among the flowers not yet open. The work on this flower, on the petals, the stamens, is extremely delicate and skillful, but it is also with the rest of the flowers, many nuances and colors are skillfully used to achieve the necessary softness.
I love the light on the cactus shovel just above the flower, it is really filled with light by the sunshine, fantastic!
Robin knows how to play with the second planes very well, the thorns, the flowers not yet open, everything has an exquisite treatment, the proper arrangement of the thorns, the exquisitely crafted background direct your vision towards the central flower.
