THE WINNERS: HOBBYIST

FIRST PLACE

Madison
Kathi Weaver

Judge's comments: Kathi has done a remarkable job with this drawing, not only capturing the engaging, introspective expression on this baby’s face, but has created beautifully soft skin tones and perfect, plump baby features, both difficult to achieve. From the delicate eyebrows and adorable mouth to the sun-kissed face and shoulders, the drawing is beautifully rendered in every way.

SECOND PLACE

Old House of Ithaka
Kyriakos Lagkadas

Judge's comments: Kyriakos has created a drawing which wonderfully embodies the essence and character of this region of the world. I love the rendering of the dilapidated white stone and intricate iron scroll work, and the balance and rhythm of repeated color is so well thought out! This drawing makes me want to be there!

THIRD PLACE

Sfakia Sheep
Joanne Bartkus

Judge's comments: So much character in this sheep portrait, with its intense gaze and slightly protruding tongue. Nice attention to the directional flow of fur and in particular, I applaud the wonderful job rendering the metal bell and leather collar.

THE WINNERS: ADVANCED

FIRST PLACE

Focused
Chad Becker

Judge's comments: I love everything about this drawing, the subject matter with its interesting narrative, the balanced color which touches on every aspect of the color wheel, and particularly the sensitive rendering, allowing the paper texture to show through which adds an exquisite softness that is very difficult to achieve. Well done!

SECOND PLACE

Cold Comfort
Lorri Dixon

Judge's comments: I found this an extremely compelling drawing, so vivid and eye-catching, and so well rendered. I love all the wonderful attention to detail-- the individual eyebrow and finger hairs catching the sun, the lined face with its convincing sprinkle of light and dark whiskers, and of course the filmy, lazy smoke curling its way up from the cigarette. An iconic image which brings back memories from another era.

THIRD PLACE

Twinkle Toes
Sue Horwath

Judge's comments: An exceptional, lovely drawing, with exquisitely rendered textures, other-worldly forms, and very sensitive use of color. Bravo on all the meticulous attention to detail which makes this a lush feast for the eyes!

THE WINNERS: PROFESSIONAL

FIRST PLACE

Shequonor
David McGee

Judge's comments: An exceedingly striking and hauntingly compelling image that David has created, the subject matter relevant and beautifully executed, a heartfelt expression of dignity, strength and determination. Beautifully rendered textures and patterns and delicate, satisfying color choices. Well done David!

SECOND PLACE

Forged in Steel Bonded in Blood
Gretchen Parker

Judge's comments: Such a very unusual and striking juxtaposition! I love the the psychological contrast presented… the fragility and innocence of an unclothed newborn, being embraced by arms adorned with metal and goth tattoos. It’s an evocative statement about parental love and perhaps for some of us, a time to examine our own uncomfortable preconceptions and biases.

THIRD PLACE

2020
Pamela Clements

Judge's comments: This drawing is a visual feast of color and textures! Melding realism and abstraction, Pamela has created a unique landscape with a wonderful rhythmical and layered composition. I love the way she has imposed her own sense of color and design over the erosion and decay, creating a moment of beautiful and lovely intimacy.

THE WINNER: BEST IN SHOW

Been a Long Day
Giddy Richt

Judge's comments: This drawing blows me away on every level. The emotional narrative, the Vermeer-like lighting and composition, the choice of colors, the beautiful, exquisite rendering of detail. This image has captured a special moment that keeps me coming back to it to contemplate again and again. It is empathetic, haunting and deeply touching. Bravo Giddy!
