How do you make colors pop on black paper?

Working on black paper can be challenging since colors don’t always look as vivid as those applied on lighter surfaces. The main reason is the pencils themselves. Since colored pencils are transparent, when applied over a dark surface the color of the paper will show through, causing the hues to appear duller and less intense.

In this class, you will discover how to use black paper to your advantage. You will learn how to select the right subject matter, what paper gives you the best results, why you need an underpainting, and the best pencil colors to use. Understanding these basic principles will help you develop the skills you need to successfully work with black paper. In the process, you will gain an appreciation for the paper’s ability to add beauty to your art.

Carmen Barros likes to work on dark paper especially when rendering shiny or translucent objects. She enjoys sharing her love of art and teaches a popular class in her hometown on painting with colored pencils. Recently her work, Lemonade, was selected as part of CPSA’s 27th Annual International Exhibition.

Scheduled on both weekdays and weekends, we hope to accommodate every schedule.
