Nice project to begin learning the basics of colored pencil

Ordered this book a few weeks ago. Just started the lesson about 4 or 5 days ago. I work on it in the evening while I'm watching tv. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. I draw freehand a lot and use colored pencils to enhance my drawings. I'd like to know more from the author of this lesson about how/why they chose the colors they did to enhance shadows, depth etc. For example, this lesson uses a deep red to enhance the shadow on grass. I'll be experimenting with a couple of other colors for shadows to see how they change the look. I really like the online beginner's 'handbook' that explains pencil strokes, erasing mistakes, etc. It gives a high level overview of how to use colored pencils well. The photo is of my work in progress.
