Relax and Enjoy Every Step of Your Artist's Journey!

This colored pencil classic still life tutorial will help you slow down and enjoy the process!

Start with a fresh, pristine sheet of white drawing paper, and let Janie guide you as you start by creating a background with just one layer. Then soon you’ll begin work on the grapes... but no, actually, you’ll begin working on the shadows of the grapes, in a classical method called grisaille.

This classic way of working helps you quickly take note of the lighter and darker values in these bursting purple fruits.

This classic way of working helps you quickly take note of the lighter and darker values in these bursting purple fruits.

Then, step by step, you'll introduce blues, purples, reds and even yellows into the grapes, creating fruits that burst with life.

Shiny apples, intricate basket, soft tea towel... all such lovely textures to learn how to draw, while creating such a timeless drawing you’ll feel proud to display. You’re in excellent and time-tested hands with Janie guiding you. She’s a botanical artist with decades of experience.

How will your finished still life look? Like a master’s that was drawn slowly, confidently and with great pleasure!

About In-Depth Tutorials:
A tutorial can be so useful in so many ways. A tutorial teaches you the author's methods. And also obviously, when you draw along with a tutorial, you learn by doing, which is much more powerful than learning by watching alone. But even more importantly, a step by step teaches you how to break down complicated subjects into small, achievable steps, learning how to look at a reference photo with an artist’s eye, analyzing where and how to start, and which details to leave in and which to leave out. It's an important skill to learn and important for any colored pencil artist's success.

Note: Drawing paper and pencils not included. See images for complete supply list. Polychromos pencil name changes can be found here.
