Outstanding Book From an Outstanding Artist and Instructor!!

Cynthia Knox, one of the biggest, brightest, and most revered stars in the colored pencil universe, is also one of its finest and most beloved authors. This, her latest book, is a perfect example of why she’s earned every one of those accolades. The moment I opened Painting in Colored Pencils, Colorful Things, I knew it was going to be something special. The unique Table of Contents page sends a clear message that this book was written by a true and talented artist, and the opening sentence in Chapter 1, “Colored pencils are my thing”, told me that the tone was going to be informal and accessible. It felt like Cynthia was speaking directly to me, so I knew that not only would I benefit from reading the book, I was going to enjoy it. Boy, I was right! The first chapter, dealing with materials and techniques, is sure to be of benefit to artists of all levels, from beginner to professional. Since Cynthia uses only the excellent and pretty much universally loved, but relatively inexpensive, Prismacolor Premier pencils in all of the lessons, I’m betting that almost every colored pencil artist will be able to work through the book without needing to substitute pencils or to buy new ones. Each of the next five tutorials gives detailed instructions for how to reproduce a specific subject, and also provides hints, tips, and tricks for a wide range of secondary challenges; bark, water, rain drops, a deceptively plain wall, and much more, including the dreaded background; sky, foliage, and grass, It’s all here. I give this book a full five stars only because a gazillion stars isn't an option!

Excellent projects, and lots of useful tips for artists of all abilities

Cynthia Knox Painting in Colored Pencil - Colorful Things. Colorful Things is a beautiful book with lovely projects that will inspire any artist. All coloured pencil artists can benefit from the techniques taught here even if they don’t necessarily complete the projects as there are lots of tips and help in the instructions that can be carried on into your own projects later! To go with the book there is an optional digital “Quick Start” pack which one can purchase online and could be very useful, especially for beginners, as it includes the full A4 outline drawings that can be printed out to copy from, and also includes a very pale version that can be printed onto the drawing paper so that people who wish can go straight to the colouring stage. There are also the full colour images that make it easier to work from as one can zoom in to see the details. The images are also in the book, of course! In Colorful Things there is an introduction section to the book followed by information about the various material Cynthia uses and different techniques for laying down the pencils. There are then individual chapters that cover each of the five projects in full detail. The book itself has my favourite picture on the front as I love drawing landscapes and love hot air balloons! The first of the colourful projects with full instructions is ‘Dynamic Duo’ with two birds (Cardinals) which is the only one done on a coloured surface. (The Strathmore Smooth Bristol 300 Series white paper is the one that Cynthia recommends for the other projects.)The second project is a rose, ‘Fire and Rain” which shows the contrast between bright fire colours and dark backgrounds. The third project is a still life with rich colours, strong shadows, and has very three dimensional fruit! The fourth picture is the landscape ‘Kaleidoscope’ - which I think is probably the most fun to do with all the colours in the balloons! The fifth project is Caribbean Queen, which is an ideal project for people who are not used to doing portraits but wish to learn how! For each of the paintings there is a list of the materials used. Most pencils used are Prismacolor Premier, but there are a few others that are also required, so it is worth checking that you have the ones you need before you start work! There are a few additional supplies needed, including the paper, and recommended eraser. Each project has detailed instructions to take the artist through all the stages from start to finish, to complete paintings that can be framed. There are lots of useful tips for artists from beginners to more advanced.

Another Cynthia Knox Treasure!!!

Colorful Things follows Sweet Things in the series in which Cynthia Knox is crafting a full gallery of treasures to advance our colored pencil journey. Her presentation of concepts and techniques is easy to follow and feels much like attending a class in person. A favored resource is the bulleted list of materials for each piece. Five beautiful, realistic and enjoyable projects to polish our colored pencil skills. The subjects vary from still life to explosions of color to an incredibly serene portrait. I was especially taken by the techniques to bring out the subtle shades and textures in the Caribbean Queen portrait. I highly recommend this book for colored pencil artists. There is so much to learn; I found myself smiling as each step revealed another tone or texture.

Breathtaking Projects, Exceptional Instructions.

This book is an extraordinary collection of five very different, dazzling colored pencil projects. Cynthia has authored a complete reference for all levels of those that are interested in colored pencils. The importance of paper quality, materials, a detailed description of the three ways to transfer a line drawing, and basics techniques (strokes, description of pressure, blending and burnishing), are covered in a straightforward, simple manner. I LOVE the variety of stunningly beautiful projects in this book! Each design is simplified into small steps with thorough, organized instructions. The small steps have a crystal clear companion photo. The projects include a pair of gorgeous cardinal birds, a lovely rose with water drops, a textured wicker basket with plums and nectarines, brightly colored hot air balloons with their reflections in a lake, and a stunning portrait. This is a beautiful book chock full of learning tips and excellent instructions!
